Nelson Beckett is an ex-cop who runs a bar and grill in a small, unconventional community, “The Edge”. Business is good, and he is considered the mayor of The Edge and the county sheriff has made him an honorary deputy. He starts having the night terrors again and he begins to fear that he might have inherited his mother’s mental illness. Another businessman asks the ex-cop if he believes in ghosts. Nelson tries to placate the man by telling him that we’re all haunted by our past and experiences.

Although she was an unusual child with some startling abilities, she never considered herself special or gifted any more than the next person. An incident on the Spenser Creek bridge changed all that, and brought about an end to childhood. She learned her quirky gifts were part of a great power: the power of vision.
