Rather than emerging victorious into the real world, Arnold O'Connor finds himself back at the beginning of Spires of Fate. This time, it's an alpha build he'd stuck inside, and he's forced to choose an entirely different class. With no outside help, he'll have to find allies within the game if he hopes to escape. What's old is new again as parts of the game world have been fixed, updated, or simply overhauled. New challenges await. New adversaries threaten. And waiting at the top of the spire itself is a simple-sounding quest goal that supplants all others.

In a world where everyone has a superpower, his was being a geek. Cue was perfectly happy working as a tech super in the dingy basement of Seattle's Superhero Office. Or at least he was until he got mixed up with a machine that could increase superpowers, foreign agents, and a fire-wielding gang of criminals. Now he's dodging fireballs and using his power to change old tech into something that can keep him alive. Luckily, he has a knack for being a hero.

Sam had closed his latest case, and now his biggest worry was his friend Harry, who had almost died. Doctors had actually pronounced him dead, in fact, but Sam was too stubborn to let them give up and the cantankerous old man came back. But was the case really closed? One of the perpetrators was being protected by the British government, and someone else had stepped up to replace the assassin who had been running the operation. When one of the clients from the case is kidnapped, Sam knows that it isn't really over yet.

Sam and his new team are drawn into a convoluted conspiracy, a plot for one company to take over another, which begins with the attempted murder of an innocent boy. When Sam learns that a powerful, professional assassin is running the operation, he decides to pull out all the stops. Unfortunately, Beauregard has warned him to be careful on this case. The old Civil War ghost, who may or may not exist, tells Sam to be careful not to arrest the wrong person—and that Death is stalking one of his team.
