This sermon was preached to encourage every person to make every effort to get into the kingdom of God—that none should be left out. Edwards opened the sermon by defining “pressing into” the kingdom, explaining why every one should earnestly seek it. He reminded the hearers that, by nature, all are in a perishing necessity of salvation, utterly lost when outside the kingdom.
