The Rough Riders are best remembered for their charge up San Juan Hill, east of Santiago de Cuba, on July 1, 1898.

In the speech, he argued against partisanship based on religion; he called it a "wicked thing" either to support or to oppose someone because of the creed they profess. He asserted that political movements directed against a person because of their religious belief have never accomplished anything but harm.

Theodore Roosevelt delivered this speech in Provincetown, Massachusetts, at the laying of the corner-stone of the Pilgrim Memorial Monument on August 20, 1907.
