The Battle of Spring Hill was fought November 29, 1864, at Spring Hill, Tennessee, as part of the Franklin-Nashville Campaign of the American Civil War. The Confederate Army of Tennessee, commanded by Lt. Gen. John Bell Hood, attacked a Union force under Maj. Gen. John M. Schofield as it retreated from Columbia through Spring Hill. Because of a series of command failures, the Confederates were unable to inflict serious damage on the Federals and could not prevent their safe passage north to Franklin during the night. The next day, Hood pursued Schofield....

Andersonville. Let it be kept in mind all the time, that the average stay of a prisoner there was not four months. The great majority came in after the first of May, and left before the middle of September. May 1st, 1864, there were 10,427 in the Stockade. August 8th there were 33,114; September 30th all these were dead or gone, except 8,218, of whom 4,590 died inside of the next 30 days. The records of the world can shove no parallel to this astounding mortality.

This narrative of prison life differs from all others that I have seen, in that it is careful to put the best possible construction upon the treatment of Union prisoners by the Confederates, and to state and emphasize kindnesses and courtesies received by us from them. For the accuracy of the facts stated, I am indebted to a diary kept from day to day during the whole of my imprisonment and to the best obtainable records. The Personal Memoirs of Ulysses S. Grant is an autobiography from the 18th president of the United States and was published by Mark Twain shortly after Grant's death in 1885. His memoirs were written in an attempt to take care of his family after his passing, which he did very well.

This volume does not claim to be a tactical, or strategic history of the campaigns of which it treats; it aims rather to be a narrative of the every day life and experience of the private soldier in camp and field how he lived, how he marched, how he fought and how he suffered. No sooner had some of the volunteers reached the front, and been subjected to the hardships and exposures of army life, than they fell sick, were sent to the hospital and were discharged without passing through any serious campaigns.

This war was quite as full of politics as were the other two - the War of the American Revolution and that of Puritan and Cavalier.
