Whicker Campbell has a problem. Since the death of his sister, his mother has been lost in her grief. As an enchanti, she cannot just let herself go, though she very much wants to. Unknowingly, she’s feeding off her son’s life force. As a necroti for the state, Whicker needs every ounce of energy he can get just to make it through his day. After a year, the effects of his mother’s feeding are finally hitting home. Whicker knows he has only a week or two left. He comes up with a desperate plan to save himself and his mother.

Overjoyed by his official adoption and the completion of the molecular transporter coming closer, Oliver's excitement over the return of his mother conflicts with the ever-expanding mystery surrounding the circumstances of her departure and Dindet's increasingly suspicious behavior. She's leaving, more often and for longer and longer periods of time. Left alone with devilishly wandering thoughts and idle hands, Oliver craves a distraction...and his name is Markus.

Oliver began to walk backwards the moment he witnessed Dindet suffer a horrific fate at the hands of an electrifying scientific experiment. And it was his fault. Or...so it seems. As Oliver falls deeper into his own self destructive tendencies in the wake of Dindet's apparent demise, another far more sinister plot rears it's ugly head in the form of Poppy, bent on pulling every last string until all the pieces fall into place, her vindictive claws are dug into all the unfortunate residents at Amelis Behavioral Health Center.
