The book begins in 1521 at the great turning point in the life of St Ignatius, when he was wounded at the battle of Pamplona. It then covers the next 17 years up to the arrival of Ignatius and his early companions in Rome. Those were the years of pilgrimage, travel and searching, and of preparation for the establishment of the great religious order he would found.

The self-titled Ignatius begins with Spain’s Ignatius Farray opening up to the audience about being recently diagnosed with a heart condition. Wondering whether comedy leads to things like health issues, alcoholism and dysfunctional families, Ignatius marvels at comedians’ ability to take any life tragedy and turn it into 10 new minutes of material. Ignatius additionally discusses the ways comedy has changed from the days of his idol Lenny Bruce, when comics got arrested for cursing on stage.

Against profiles of other leaders, drawn from different times in history, Jesus emerges as a role model whose example resonates powerfully with all of us leaders - in corporate boardrooms, in government, in social causes, in sports teams, in families, in every facet of life.
