In this little volume of collected messages selected for the unity of their subject matter and given by the author through years of faithful ministry, Watchman Nee attempts to show us the reality of the body of Christ. He proves to us that the body of Christ is founded on life and life consciousness.

As we are quickly approaching the close of this age with the blessed hope in view of the dawning of a new age, even the millennium, it is no surprise that the hearts of God's children are increasingly drawn to the last book of the Bible, Revelation. Whereas in the past that book was shunned by most as not being understandable, now it is looked upon as a blessed book, just as it is written of it. Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of the prophecy, and keep the things that are written therein.

Watchman Nee's thesis in this book is that Christ came to mankind by way of the cross, and only by this same way can we know him. At the source of all spiritual things, he says, stands the cross.

An important medical breakthrough has a shameful history. In 1840s Alabama, a slave-owning doctor performs medical experiments on involuntary subjects - enslaved women - in an effort to solve the problem of fistulas, a post-childbirth anomaly. As the experiments proceed, and he gets close to a solution, the women try to survive and even find dignity in the face of inhuman treatment.

Why do the righteous suffer? This is an age-long dilemma. The human soul agitates over it. Man's wisdom endeavors to solve it. But God alone has the right answer. In the book of Job, God reveals the hidden purpose behind the suffering of the righteous. For suffering is unto sonship. Thank God, through the redemptive work of Christ, we Christians are to have our families restored to God's original purpose. This short series of messages, delivered by the author before a gathering of God's people in Washington, DC, beginning in September 1974, is therefore being published as a way of helping Christian believers elsewhere to see and carry out God's purpose for the family. Christianity is Jesus Christ. It is not the teaching, doctrine, system, or organization of Christ. Rather, it is Jesus Christ himself. We need to see him as God sees him. Yet this can only come about by revelation from above. The Holy Spirit will reveal Jesus to us. And when we do see him as God sees him, we will fall down and worship. Such, then, is the intent of this series of messages, whose overarching theme is best summed up in the author's choice of title to the entire series: "But We See Jesus" (Hebrews 2:9a).

Having come to see Christ Jesus, we are now ready to see his church, about which Jesus had declared this: "I will build my [church], and hades' gates shall not prevail against it" (Matthew 16:18b). From this declaration we realize that the church is not the product of the work of man, but it is the Lord Jesus himself who builds the church. Hence, in scripture, the church is called "the Christ" (I Corinthians 12:12c; Ephesians 3:4b, 8b Darby).
