George Washington Carver was determined to help the people he loved. Born enslaved in Missouri, he left home in search of an education, eventually earning his master’s degree. When Booker T. Washington invited Carver to start the agricultural department at the all-Black-staffed Tuskegee Institute, Carver found his calling. He spent the rest of his life seeking solutions to poverty among landless Black farmers by developing new uses for soil-replenishing crops such as peanuts, cowpeas, and sweet potatoes.

Like most of us, we start and stop so many things in life. I started and stopped so many times because I was questioning myself. Marilyn Benjamin Wassmann was born on a leap year and earned four degrees—two in art history, one in library science, and one in studio art. Before retiring in 2011, Marilyn worked as an art cataloger at the Library of Congress. She has illustrated and contributed to anthologies for the Greenbelt Writers Group, and in 2010, she published a children's book with her husband's assistance entitled What the Wind Blew In. Besides drawing and painting, Marilyn writes poetry in her spare time.

A king wants his son to understand the true meaning of Christmas, so he sends the prince on a quest. The prince is to find an old sage who will tell him the meaning of Christmas. The king gives his son three gifts that he is supposed to give to the sage for telling him the meaning of Christmas. On the way, the prince encounters several people that he is able to help, but in order to do so, he gives away the gifts he was supposed to give to the old sage. The prince returns home and has to tell his father he failed because he gave away the gifts.
