The Western Groom: Penny Wise and Pound Foolish, is the story of a trading post operator and a bible salesman. When her Uncle Joe is killed, Penny is left to handle the trading post in a fairly remote area of Colorado. Her store was robbed and she's on the edge of a breakdown and she's lost most of her faith, when a bible salesman she is acquainted with stops by. He stays for a while, then much longer, and helps her get the store back on its feet.

Mail Order Bride: Two Sisters and the Family Quilt Go West for Love is the story of two sisters sent by their parents to California, where one is to be a mail order bride. On the train journey they meet two men who seem strangely familiar and along the way, grow to like them. The one intended mail order bride fights her feelings, knowing that she is to be married as soon as she gets to the west coast, but it is very hard when the handsome stranger seems to be interested in her, as well.

A wonderful story about an entrepreneur in old Montana, Weston B. Freeman. He has a checkered and colorful and sometimes sordid past but he finally wants to settle down - and he’s lonely. He advertises for a mail order bride but it’s a long wait, until a woman from England shows up at his bar unannounced. She’s attracted to him immediately and he to her, but a little later a few things surface from his past, then his present, that may throw their arrangement into utter confusion.

Saving Lonely Crippled Thomas: Thomas lives virtually alone in his house in Pennsylvania, with only his cousin to look after him. His legs were damaged in a railway accident and the only way he can get around his house is by crawling, or by means of an awkward chaise lounge prototype wheelchair that his cousin pushes. He loses his faith and reads only controversial books.

Oregon Trail Journey after The Civil War, is the story of a southern woman and her older brother, striking out for the West to escape the hardships of the South after the Civil War. She didn't want to leave her home but not wanting to be left isolated, she went with him. The wagon train along the Oregon Trail is led by a seasoned veteran of the War, on the opposite side. Romance develops but the brother is still bitter about the south losing the war.

Mail Order Bride: Emily Seeks out the Traveling Preacher for Love is the emotional story of a Southern woman, right before the Civil War, who is determined to find a childhood sweetheart in a traveling preacher. When he told her that his life was being an evangelist and that traveling across the country wasn't exactly a good life for a Southern lady, she told him that she wanted to join him in his ministry, as she had attended school and learned all about preaching.

Mail Order Husband: To the Ranch and Meeting Virginia & Her Hidden Sister is about a lonely dockworker who travels west to meet a woman living on a rundown ranch, hoping to find love and companionship with a Christian woman. After a very brief amount of time, he finds himself in love. There is only one obstacle; he has never met her sister who lives in a bedroom upstairs. As he declares his love, events unfold that provide an emotional ending to the tale.

Chance Strangers on a Train Headed West is about a mail order bride headed for California, and a man she has never met, to marry him and start a new life out west. When she meets a charming and handsome lawyer who was fired from his firm and is now headed there too, she is torn between the duty to her parents to marry who they chose for her, and a burgeoning respect then love for Asa, her stranger on a train.

The Western Mail Order Bride: Gold of a Different Kind, is about one young woman forced into prostitution, along with her sister, and how she was saved by a lonely preacher in Montana who wanted nothing more than a wife to love and cherish. Without his help they would both have more than likely died. Little does he know that when beautiful Rachel arrives on the train and he sees her for the first time, how many more lives are both saved and loved, and how their eventual union will change their town forever.

The Baby Left Along The Oregon Trail & Rescued By Christian Pioneers is a heart-warming story about a poor wagon train making its way along the Oregon Trail. The train may be poor but the Christians on it are strong. A Native American baby is found along the trail by one young man and he takes it immediately to the wagon train. There are no nursing mothers on the small train and no source of food for the infant.

Almost Missing the Boat: A Victorian Christian Mail Order Bride Romance is about a woman living in London who is to be married off to a man of her mother's choice; a baron she has no feelings for. She runs off to the docks hoping to escape the situation, but sees him by the ticket office, searching for her. Making a last minute leap to a ship, with no idea where she'll end up, she puts her faith in God that she's made the right decision.

High Society Woman & The Wolves, is about a high society woman in NYC who gets sent off to Oregon to be the bride of a lonely outpost operator. He is as stunned by her beauty when she gets off the train, as she is by the wilderness surrounding his cabin and home. She doesn’t know how to make a fire or even sweep the floor and her many trunks of fine clothing fill up his small cabin. Amidst the howls of wolves surrounding them in the darkness of the forest, both will have to decide if they can ever make a match.

The longer that Jay Gould was chief shareholder of Union Pacific, the more advancements for the railroad and for his own system of roads he procured. His adversaries in this drama are the executives of the Chicago Burlington and Quincy Railroad who disputed the rates and branches of the Iowa Pool of railroads with him. There are also reconcilements in this play, first with Carlos Greeley of the Kansas Pacific bondholders and the other with Henry Villard.

Jane Candia Coleman is a natural storyteller whose characters come from the lands between the southwestern valleys of Arizona and the Gila Mountains of New Mexico. The night Billy the Kid died is hauntingly depicted in "Corrido for Billy". "Lady Flo" is a memoir, based on historical fact, of the black wife of an Irish nobleman. "Moving On" depicts a young girl abandoned by her family who finds her way with an itinerant Jewish peddler. And "Are You Coming Back, Phin Montana?" is the winner of the 1995 Spur Award for Best Western Short Fiction.

Shaw's forte was her ability to create interesting casts of characters through whom and between whom she was able to develop a suspenseful and unpredictable interplay. This story is a good example of her character driven Western fiction.

Two young men in the gold fields of California spend a last evening together as one of them, very sick, confronts his own imminent death. The tenderness between them may seem idealized, but you understand by listening to this story how premature death from accident and disease haunted the lives of far more westerners than death by violence.
