『American Friends』シリーズ第8章。 友達を批評したり、頼みを断ったりするのは、どの言語においても難しいことです。今回のレッスンでは、アメリカ人が友達の感情を害することなく自分の意見を表明するために、どのように建設的な批評を使うか、そしてどのように礼儀正しく頼みを断るかについて解説します。 友達を批評しなければいけない時には、建設的な批評をすることが大切です。否定的な批評はどんなことがあっても避けるべきです。否定的な批評は他の人を非難したり、故意に侮辱したりすることから成り立ちます。これらの二つの形の批評の違いを紹介します。 また、人付き合いの中でもう一つ難しいことは、友達の頼みを断ることです。実際これは、日本人とアメリカ人の間に誤解が生じる最大の理由の一つです。日本人は、一般的にストレートに頼みを断ることはしません。言い換えれば決して「ノー」とは言いません。要求を受け入れがたいことを表す、別の表現を使います。しかしながら、アメリカでは「ノー」と言うか、ノーを意味するフレーズを使えなくてはなりません!これは率直に要求を断ることを意味します。もちろん、そうするには批評の場合と同じように、礼儀正しいやり方と失礼なやり方があります。相手の気分を害することなく上手に頼みを断る表現方法を、このレッスンでマスターしましょう!

Almost 10 years before Brown vs. Board of Education, Sylvia Mendez and her parents helped end school segregation in California. An American citizen of Mexican and Puerto Rican heritage who spoke and wrote perfect English, Mendez was denied enrollment to a whites-only school. Her parents took action by organizing the Hispanic community and filing a lawsuit in federal district court. Their success eventually brought an end to the era of segregated education in California.
