American Social History

From the late 19th century through the 1930s, scholars of politics defined and continually reoriented their field in response to the political imperatives of the racial order at home and abroad as well to as the vagaries of race science. The Gilded Age scholars who founded the first university departments and journals located sovereignty and legitimacy in a "Teutonic germ" of liberty planted in the new world by Anglo-Saxon settlers and almost extinguished in the conflict over slavery.

Twelve Years a Slave is the true story of Solomon Northup: born a free black man in New York State, and sold into slavery after being tricked in 1841. Unable to convince anyone he is not a slave, Solomon spent 12 years in bondage, before finally being set free. Northup’s memoir, recounting details of the slave markets and the harsh life on plantations, was used in the struggle to abolish slavery in the United States.

David Roberts describes the culture of the Anasazi - the name means "enemy ancestors" in Navajo - who once inhabited the Colorado Plateau and whose modern descendants are the Hopi Indians of Arizona. The truth is, if you don't know your history, you lose your civilization and your culture. If the primary history that children of African Descent are taught boils down to "we came from slaves", we not only lose the rich complexity of the African culture, but we start children off with a "less than equal" subtlety that disengages them from wanting to learn their history or to be a part of a system which stands for principals of justice and equality, but yet lives according to a much different system, one of corruption and profits at all cost. This needs to change.
