Questa è una raccolta di due testi, di Ovidio e di Catulle Mendès, che l'editore ha sottotitolato come “fisiologia comparata degli amori degli antichi romani e dei parigini moderni”, affidando la prefazione dell'opera appunto ad un fisiologo, il medico e scienziato Paolo Mantegazza. Ma è inutile dire che l'accenno alla medicina è volutamente paradossale, tanto il celebrato amore terreno sia impenetrabile agli innumerevoli sforzi di razionalizzarlo.

La plupart de ces poèmes ont été écrits entre 1846 et 1855. Mais les poèmes les plus anciens de ce recueil datent de 1834. Les 11 000 vers des "Contemplations" comptent parmi les plus beaux poèmes de la poésie française. Victor Hugo y est à l'apogée de son art poétique.

The Völsunga saga is a legendary saga, a late 13th-century poetic rendition in Old Norse of the origin and decline of the Völsung clan (including the story of Sigurd and Brynhild and the destruction of the Burgundians). Andrew Marvell was born in Winestead-in-Holderness, in the East Riding of Yorkshire on March 31st, 1621. He was educated at Hull Grammar School, and at the age of 13 he attended Trinity College, Cambridge, and eventually received his BA degree. It is thought that in 1642 Marvell travelled in Europe and, while England was embroiled in its civil war, remained there until 1647, mastering several languages including French, Italian and Spanish.

Perhaps the first great and truly "American" poet, Walt Whitman's writing reflected the idealism and turbulence of the mid-19th century. His poetry broke new stylistic ground with its unconventional meter and rhyme schemes, yet celebrated democratic values, the beauty of nature, and the complex variety and vitality of American life.
