Het verschil tussen mensen en insecten is niet zo groot. Dat ontdekt Erik Pinksterblom wanneer hij op een nacht het schilderij Wollewei boven zijn bed binnenstapt. Op het schilderij staan allerlei insecten afgebeeld en als hij verzucht dat hij daar zo graag eens zou zijn, gebeurt het wonder: Erik wordt piepklein en is opeens ín het schilderij. Daar beleeft hij allerlei avonturen; hij is onder meer te gast bij de wespenfamilie Vliesvleugel, logeert een tijdje in hotel Het Slakkenhuis en hij sluit vriendschap met een vlinder.
