Apocalyptic History

The Scarlet Plague, by Jack London, was the first example of a post-apocalyptic fiction novel in modern literature. Set in a ravaged and wild America, the story takes place in 2073, 60 years after the spread of the Red Death, an uncontrollable epidemic that depopulated and nearly destroyed the world in 2013. One of the few survivors, James Howard Smith, alias “Granser”, tells his incredulous and near-savage grandsons how the pandemic spread in the world and about the reactions of the people to contagion and death.

In the 158 years after Hitler's death (AH158), Germany has become the utopian state that he had originally envisioned. The Aryan Dynasty has conquered the free world at the cost of billions of lives. Hitler has become the patriarch of a new religious fervor, one that even he did not see coming. The wastelands that surround Germany are the only threat awaiting the German citizens. That is at least what everyone is taught.

Hi. My name is Frank. This is my story. Most of the world didn't live all the way through the cataclysmic events. Most of us who did are content to just write our stories down, place them in bottles, and toss those bottles into the stream. Like most, I'm hoping that somebody downstream will find my story. Then perhaps, all the stories will merge. All the pieces will be put together. And at last we'll finally know what really happened. This is my story of what happened the night the stars went away.

A future America has become a horrific place, all in the name of creating the perfect society. Mass graves and interviewing for your life have become the norm, and one man is coming to grips with the implications of his silence in the face of evil.
