Growing up in Prince George, BC, our family owned the National Hotel from 1972 to 1998. As soon as I was able to pick up garbage in the parking lot, my dad had me working for my allowance. Throughout the years, I have done everything from the payroll, to carrying the raw sewage pipes out during the renovations in 1984. When I was in school, I would work weekends. During summer break, I would work full-time at the hotel. When I had enough of school, I chose to work full-time at the hotel. These are some of the true stories, and - believe it or not - they were seen with my own eyes too.

The following stories took place from 1978 till 2016. They are all 100 percent true. In 1978 my dad, my mom, my dad’s business partner (Walter), and a new party all bought the First Litre Complex. When they first bought it, it consisted of a pub, grocery store, beauty salon, and laundromat. There also was an apartment below the grocery store that the owner-operator was going to live in. The owner operator eventually moved out beside the complex, into a little house that the partners purchased. We leased the grocery store out to an independent operator.

As the city of Windsor, Ontario, celebrated the end of World War II and the return of its troops with parades and public revelry, the industrial city in the south of Canada was shaken by a series of brutal stabbings. The failure of the police to catch the murderer, a "blood lusting maniac" as the local newspaper described him, the turbulence of the times, and the seemingly random nature of the killings plunged the city into a panic.

Using a Canadian émigré lens, David Wayne Stewart’s essay collection, True North, Down South, entertains and educates listeners about immigrant and national identity, cultural misunderstandings, and belonging in the modern world. Stewart’s Canadian identity was contested by Quebec separatists when he was a child, then again in his adult life as an immigrant to the United States.

The island complex where these true tales take place is truly a beautiful place on Earth, located off the coast of British Columbia. The island at the time of these stories had about 500 residents. The self-help complex was run by two homosexual doctors. They were quite a happy couple together. You could not ask for a more relaxing and tranquil place to build a complex to live out your life and help people get better for a living. It was run by two guys in love trying to make a difference in the world. What could possibly go wrong with that? Here we go.
