Civic Engagement

Socialism, communism, fascism and Nazism are all but dead now. They have failed miserably. But they have been replaced by what is merely another more watered-down form of collectivism that may be called "interventionism". Indeed, interventionism is the predominant economic system in the world today. Contrary to the doctrine of laissez-faire capitalism, in the real world there are prolonged periods when market forces cannot self-correct in time to best serve the common good. Resulting social instability can only be corrected by government action.

From the Women's March in DC to #BlackLivesMatter rallies across the country, there has been a rising wave of protests and social activism. These events have been an important part of the battle to combat racism, authoritarianism, and xenophobia in Trump's America. However, the struggle for social justice continues long after the posters and megaphones have been packed away. After the protests are heard, how can we continue to work toward lasting change?

To have a thriving society, we need people and communities who are actively involved in civic life. For politicians, public servants, corporations, or planners to engage with communities in any positive way, they need to learn a new way of doing things.

Too often, political questions are framed in impossible ways for the faithful Christian: We're forced to choose between social justice and biblical values, between supporting women and opposing abortion. As a result, it's easy for Christians to grow disillusioned with civic engagement or fall back into tribal extremes. This state of affairs has damaged Christian public witness and divided the church. The authors of this book represent the AND Campaign, which exists to educate and organize Christians for faithful civic and cultural engagement.

Juan Narvaez is a young boy living in the dying town of Alborde. Once famous for its great olive trees, Alborde has lost its prosperity and population as the people who cultivate the land move from place to place across the country as migrant workers to supplement their meager incomes. The children of the migrant workers, Juan's young friends, are forced to go with their parents, losing out on the opportunity for proper education and thus a future different from their parents. Juan realizes things have to change.
