Un racconto allegorico che narra la ribellione degli animali di una fattoria contro il proprietario Jones. Guidati dal Vecchio Maggiore, un maiale saggio e anziano (rappresenta Lenin), riusciranno a conquistare la fattoria e a creare una società dove tutti sono uguali. Ma dopo pochi giorni il Vecchio Maggiore morirà e sarà sostituito da un altro maiale, l’opportunista e despota Napoleon (rappresenta Stalin), che prenderà il sopravvento su Palla di Neve, un maiale rivoluzionario e sincero (Trockij).

La satira classica della rivoluzione russa di George Orwell è una parte intima della nostra cultura contemporanea, citata così spesso che tendiamo a dimenticare chi ha scritto le parole originali. È un resoconto della coraggiosa lotta che trasforma la fattoria terriera del signor Jones in fattoria degli animali, una società interamente democratica costruita sul credo che tutti gli animali sono creati uguali. La fattoria degli animali (Animal Farm) è la grande allegoria socio-politica di George Orwell ambientata in una fattoria padronale inglese, dove gli animali decidono di fare la rivoluzione per liberarsi dalle catene dello sfruttamento a cui sono sottoposti da Mr. Jones e creare una società comunitaria in cui diritti e doveri siano equamente distribuiti e i bisogni primari soddisfatti per tutti, una sorta di comunismo utopistico da cui gli umani sono banditi per sempre. Essi dichiarano che lavorare per gli esseri umani non è di nessuna utilità per loro.

Tutti gli animali sono uguali, ma alcuni animali sono più uguali degli altri. Stanchi dei soprusi, gli animali di una fattoria decidono di ribellarsi agli umani e, cacciato il proprietario, danno vita a un nuovo ordine fondato sull'uguaglianza. "La fattoria degli animali" voleva essere, nelle intenzioni dell'autore, una realistica allegoria della Russia Sovietica, dominata da Stalin. La cacciata dell'uomo avrebbe dovuto portare tra gli animali della fattoria liberata alla realizzazione di quei valori di egualitarismo, fratellanza e libertà che sono il manifesto ideologico dell'illuminismo e da cui hanno tratto la loro origine marxismo, socialismo, comunismo. Nel libro viene ben rappresentato come nella realtà la salita al potere da parte dei nuovi suonatori non determinerà affatto il cambiamento della musica, tutt'altro.
