Jakob Grimm (1785 - 1863) y su hermano, Wilhelm (1786 - 1859), nacieron en Hanau, Hesse (Alemania). A los 20 años de edad, Jakob trabajaba como bibliotecario y Wilhelm como secretario de la biblioteca. Antes de llegar a los 30 años, habían logrado sobresalir gracias a sus publicaciones. Fueron profesores en la universidad de Kassel, y en la de Gotinga. Más tarde, se trasladaron a la universidad Humboldt de Berlin.
