Paradise Lost is an epic poem in blank verse by the 17th-century English poet John Milton. Originally published in 1667 in ten books and later revised to twelve, here Anthony Quayle reads book 1 and book 4.

Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales, a collection of narratives written between 1387 and 1400, tells of a group of 30 people from all layers of society who pass the time along their pilgrimage to Canterbury by telling stories to one another, their interaction mediated (at times) by the affable host - Chaucer himself. If ever a writer needed an introduction, Arthur Conan Doyle would not be considered that man. After all, Sherlock Holmes is perhaps the most well-known literary detective of any age. This poetic exploration of the subject of love was composed in Italy 1821, and published anonymously, as the poet wished its circulation to be restricted to the "esoteric few." The title means "concerning or about a little soul", the subject, in this case, being Shelley's inamorata of the time, Countess Teresa (designated "Emily" in the poem) Viviani, a young woman who was immured in the Convent of Saint Anna by her father. Shelley had had a number of contacts with her by letter and in person.

"Ritter Toggenburg" ist eine im Juli des Balladenjahres 1797 entstandene Ballade von Friedrich Schiller. Nach Schillers Kalendereintrag schloss er sie am 31. Juli ab. Das in zehn trochäischen Strophen verfasste Gedicht erschien erstmals noch im gleichen Jahr im Musen-Almanach für das Jahr 1798 und wurde auch in die Gedichtausgaben von 1800 und 1804 aufgenommen.

Dies Gedicht entstand im Jahre 1796, vermutlich auf Anregung Goethes „Der Mythus“, welcher ihm zu Grunde liegt, ist der Raub der Proserpina, der auch schon von mehreren Dichtern des Altertums besungen worden ist. Proserpina war die Tochter des Zeus und der Ceres. Als sie herangewachsen war, tanzte sie einst in den Reihen der von Pallas und Artemis angeführten Nymphen. Aber angelockt durch liebliche Blumen, die dem Boden entsprossen, entfernte sie sich mit einigen Gespielinnen, und zuletzt auch von diesen.

"Der Handschuh" ist eine der bekanntesten Balladen Friedrich Schillers aus dem Jahr 1797, dem Jahr des freundschaftlichen Wettstreits um die besseren Balladen mit Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Die achtstrophige Ballade handelt vom Missbrauch einer Liebe. König Franz sitzt mit seinem Gefolge auf dem Balkon des Löwengartens, um einen Tierkampf zu sehen. Ein Löwe betritt die Arena, ein Tiger, zwei Leoparden. Daraufhin lässt Fräulein Kunigunde ihren Handschuh zwischen die Raubkatzen fallen und fordert den Ritter Delorges, welcher schon seit langem um sie wirbt, auf, ihn zurückzubringen.

Reiterlied: Wohlauf Kameraden, aufs Pferd, aufs Pferd! Ins Feld, in die Freiheit gezogen. Im Felde, da ist der Mann noch was werth, Da wird das Herz noch gewogen. Da tritt kein anderer für ihn ein, Auf sich selber steht er da ganz allein.

Die Kindsmörderin ist ein Gedicht von Friedrich Schiller aus dem Jahre 1782. Es handelt von einer schönen jungen Frau, die ihr uneheliches Kind aus Sehnsucht tötet. Entstehung: Das Gedicht wurde in Schillers Anthologie auf das Jahre 1782 abgedruckt, zuvor wurde eines seiner Gedichte, Die Entzückung von Laura, von Gotthold Friedrich Stäudlin im Schwäbischen Musenalmanach auf das Jahr 1782 aufgezeigt. Schiller wollte Stäudlin die Rolle eines Repräsentanten der schwäbischen Poesie nicht kampflos überlassen und veröffentlichte deshalb seine eigene Anthologie.

A short masterpiece by the visionary English romantic poet, William Blake. The poem follows Thel, a young shepherdess who wanders through a fantastical pastoral world called the Vales of Har, yearning to understand her purpose. Primarily concerned with her own mortality, various natural entities in her environment, including a cloud and a clod of dirt, offer her insights. The poem is significant for its animistic-natural representation of divinity and its direct handling of the question of existence.

"The Raven", by American writer Edgar Allan Poe, was first published in January 1845. The poem is often noted for its musicality, stylized language, and supernatural atmosphere. It tells of a talking raven's mysterious visit to a distraught young man lamenting the loss of his love, Lenore.
