من الصعب تخمين كيف أُطلق على الدار اسم ‘قمة الجبل المشمسة’؛ إذ لا شيء يوحي بالجبال وقممها هنا؛ فالأرض مستوية، وهي بالتأكيد أكثر ملاءمة لقاطني الدار من كبار السن, كما يوجد بالدار حديقة فسيحة، وإن لم يكن بها شيء مميز. وكانت الدار نفسها عبارة عن قصر كبير نسبيًّا على الطراز الفيكتوري القديم، لكنه في حالة جيدة, إذ كانت ثمة بعض الأشجار وارفة الظلال التي تبهج الناظرين، ونبات اللبلاب الذي يحيط بالدار، بالإضافة إلى شجرتي أروكاريا اللتين تضفيان على الأجواء إحساسًا غريبًا, وتتراص عدة مقاعد في أماكن ملائمة للاستمتاع بضوء الشمس، كما توجد شرفة مسقوفة تجلس عليها السيدات المسنات لاتقاء الرياح الشمالية.

Wieland (1798) is an early American novel set in 1760s Pennsylvania. Based on a real case of a New York farmer who murdered his family, the story is imbued with suspense and intrigue, adopting Gothic devices such as ventriloquism and spontaneous combustion. The satanic interloper Carwin exercises his power over the narrator, Clara Wieland, wreaking havoc over the Wieland family with disastrous consequences. A central theme in the novel is the issue of the values that formed the basis of a new democratic and republican America.

It is strange to consider that, although The Hound Of The Baskervilles is Conan Doyle’s most popular novel, his hero is absent for much of the time. Notice how he sets up an atmosphere of supernatural horror right from the start through Dr Mortimer’s reading of the ancient curse, and how he then presents as assortment of bizarre clues – in particular, the riddle of the missing boots – which Holmes will have to unravel.
