The story is told from the first person perspective of an unnamed narrator and details his experiences with a scientist named Crawford Tillinghast. Tillinghast creates an electronic device that emits a resonance wave, which stimulates an affected person’s pineal gland, thereby allowing them to perceive planes of existence outside the scope of accepted reality.

As he struggles to fight the gangsters at large, he is also trying to sustain an ordinary life. At least, as ordinary as it can get when you're a vampire... Death hasn't ended Jack Fleming's problems. In der Kutsche dann erinnert er sich an ein schreckliches Erlebnis, durch das er seinen Freund Quenton verlor. Als er wieder zu sich kommt, vergehen nur noch Minuten, bis der Kutscher samt Kutsche und Pferde im Morast versinkt; die Wesen haben wieder zugeschlagen.
