Since as far back as Ben can remember, it’s been him, his devoted dad, and Sunshine - Ben’s little dog, who rarely leaves Ben’s side. It was Mom who did the leaving, and Ben’s about to spend a whole week with his suddenly present mother in the wilds of northern Minnesota. On the remote island she calls home, Ben will learn to camp, canoe, weather the elements, and weigh a burning question: When will she come back to where she belongs?

They are hoping to find a waterfall they have heard about. They don't know that an escaped prisoner is being sought by police in the area, but they find his hideout (Mad Dog's cave) and are highly suspicious when they find a big bag of money. They freak out and decide to head back toward home, but they need to go off the creek in case they bump into him, and adventure ensues.

Ben invites his friends over for a sleepover, but it soon turns scary when the lights go out, and they realize that there's a ghost dog in the house! But can it really be a ghost, or have their imaginations run away with them? It's another mystery for the Cluefinders Club, four young amateur detectives who will do what it takes to save the day! Together, Beatrix, Ben, Clara and Chris must use their reasoning and bravery to solve the mystery of the ghost job!
