Working with the full cooperation of the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, Steven Naifeh and Gregory White Smith have accessed a wealth of previously untapped materials. Het "lied" is een zeer algemeen begrip dat vele soorten en vormen van liederen omvat. Wanneer we tegenwoordig het lied als kunstvorm beschouwen, bedoelen we in feite het lied met begeleiding van piano. Hoewel dat een ernstige beperking impliceert, behandelt Leo Samama in deze serie colleges toch overwegend dat klavierlied. Grofweg van Haydn en Mozart tot in onze tijd. Hij vertelt ook over de ontwikkeling van de spannende samenwerking tussen muziek en tekst. Begint de kracht van de muziek inderdaad waar die van de tekst ophoudt, of is de symbiose vele malen groter dan dat?

Het belang van het antieke Griekse theater blijkt uit de doorwerking en invloed ervan in latere eeuwen. Dichters, prozaschrijvers, beeldend kunstenaars, cineasten, componisten en choreografen raakten hierdoor geïnspireerd. Maar het belang blijkt ook uit de vele opvoeringen van klassieke toneelstukken in de huidige tijd. De vraagstukken die in de tragedies en komedies aan de orde komen zijn tijdloos en de schitterende poëtische taal blijft het publiek aanspreken en ontroeren, ook in vertaling. In zijn hoorcollege bespreekt Hein van Dolen zoveel mogelijk facetten van het antieke theater.

In de westerse kunst- en cultuurgeschiedenis beslaat de Renaissance bovenal de periode tussen 1400 en 1600. De confrontatie met de denkbeelden uit de antieke wereld bracht een wedergeboorte van de kunsten teweeg en was een breekpunt met wat men lang beschouwde als de ‘donkere middeleeuwen’. Tegenwoordig zien we de voortekenen van een renaissance al vanaf de late 12e eeuw opdoemen, met de herontdekking van de klassieke oudheid en de opkomst van het humanisme.

In haar hoorcollege over 120 jaar stijlen en substijlen in jazz en in de geïmproviseerde muziek geeft Vera Vingerhoeds inzicht in de muzikale ontwikkelingen in jazz. Wat is jazz? Hoe ontwikkelen zich nieuwe vormen van jazz? Welke muzikale ingrediënten zijn kenmerkend voor een stijl? Hoe wordt er geïmproviseerd? Van worksongs en blues via swing, bebop en free jazz naar postbop, fusion, wereldjazz en de urban jazz van vandaag: meer dan 20 jazzstijlen komen aan bod met gebruikmaking van veel luisterfragmenten.

Their vast empire that reached across the world made money from spices, raw materials, metals, and so much more, with an extensive network of ships and merchants, and an entire army fleet. The Dutch Golden Era was a time in Dutch history varying from about 1588 (the start of the Dutch Republic) to 1672 (the "Catastrophe Year"), throughout which Dutch trade, science, and art, and the Dutch armed force, were amongst the world's best.
