Charles de Gaulle is een duurzame, Franse staatsman en schrijver. Leider van de Vrije Fransen en leider van het Franse Nationale Comité Liberation tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog, voorzitter van de Voorlopige Regering van de Franse Republiek 1944-1946, de aanstichter van de Vijfde Republiek, opgericht in 1958, is hij president van de Franse Republiek van 8 januari 1959 en met 28 april 1969. het is de eerste om het hoogste ambt te bezetten onder de Vijfde Republiek.
