Is there, or was there ever, such a thing as a "Christian" Canada? Contrary to what historical revisionists might claim, Canada has a rich and deep Catholic and Protestant heritage.

Three events transpired in 1492 in the Iberian Peninsula, which had tremendous ramifications for years to come. The first was the conquest of Granada, i.e., the last Muslim stronghold, by Castilian and Aragonese forces. The victory ended eight hundred years of Islam-ic rule. The conquest of Granada eventually also led to the conversions of many Muslims to Christianity, the phenomenon of Crypto-Islam, and the eventual expulsion of the descendants of these converts in 1609.

The earliest Christians were known not simply as believers or adherents of a new religion; they were called Followers of the Way. This title, taken from the words of Jesus Himself who declared, “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life”, reflected a profound understanding of what it meant to live in relationship with Messiah. To be a Follower of the Way was not merely to agree with a set of beliefs or participate in rituals.

Church has become boring, religious, and/or irrelevant for many people; while God is none of the above. Why is there such a difference between the perceived church and the real God that the church proclaims? The early church was unscripted, alive, powerful, unpredictable, life-changing, and world-shaking. Our church services today are usually scripted, predictable, polished performances that seem to be making little impact in our society. Why? The answer may surprise you.
