The Analects are a collection of Confucius’s sayings brought together by his pupils shortly after his death in 497 BC. Together they express a philosophy, or a moral code, by which Confucius, one of the most humane thinkers of all time, believed everyone should live. Upholding the ideals of wisdom, self-knowledge, courage and love of one’s fellow man, he argued that the pursuit of virtue should be every individual’s supreme goal.

We spend so much time in pursuit of happiness—trying to purchase it, experience it, meditate our way toward it—but happiness is elusive and doesn’t last. What departs the Way is already doomed, posits Lao, thus validating this understanding of his teachings as a nature philosophy which, like the nearly contemporaneous Athenian enlightenment, crested thousands of years ahead of its modern reawakening.

Living transcendentally is not the same as "having the answers to life". The intention with which this book is written is to help you identify the God within yourself. Religion is a guidepost, but not the answer. Philosophy is a guidepost, not the answer. People who over-identify with one group or tribe for ideological reasons invariably meet with disappointment because there will always be some tenets they internally oppose and disagree with. Yet they ignore their inner voice in order to "fit in with the rest".
