Hi, I’m Richard Walker, and I wrote Who Cares? A decade ago. The climate crisis and the financial crisis of 2008 were the main motivators for me. Now in 2021, we are still hurtling toward a climate disaster, despite more than 30 years of dire warnings. And we’ve been devastated by a virus even though scientists have been warning governments for the past 40 years. One early warning came from a Nobel Prize winner. Joshua Lederberg he said: “The single biggest threat to man’s continued dominance on the planet is the virus.”

This is the fascinating life story of Reverend Anthony Burrus, who was born in the roaring twenties to a sharecropper and his wife in the tiny dust bowl town of Castle, Oklahoma. In early 1968 the grisly on-the-job deaths of two African-American sanitation workers in Memphis, Tennessee, prompted an extended strike by that city's segregated force of trash collectors. Workers sought union protection, higher wages, improved safety, and the integration of their work force. Their work stoppage became a part of the larger civil rights movement and drew an impressive array of national movement leaders to Memphis, including, on more than one occasion, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. King added his voice to the struggle in what became the final speech of his life.

Andre Norman’s early life put him on a path to prison. Raised in poverty and surrounded by dysfunction, Andre gravitated to his neighborhood gang. His choices there led to time in juvenile detention, and eventually a maximum-security prison, with sentences totaling over 100 years. During that time, Andre became one of the most dangerous gang leaders in the Massachusetts prison system. Then came the epiphany. Just before Andre was to be crowned “King of the Prison,” he had a realization—that he was about to become the “King of Nowhere.”

Destroying is always easier than creating. Tearing is simpler than swinging. It takes years to construct a building, but it can be destroyed in the blink of an eye. Now, let's see how we can make use of this practical rule. Is it possible to take advantage of destroying poverty instead of making wealth? Doubtlessly, both will lead to the same result.
