Im März 2020 änderte sich alles. Homeoffice war plötzlich die neue Norm. Alle mussten sich digitalisieren und transformieren – ob sie wollten oder nicht. Die Arbeit drängte weiter ins restliche Leben, zur Erwerbsarbeit kam noch mehr Carearbeit. Die Schere zwischen systemrelevanten Berufen und Bürojobs ging weiter auf. Covid hat uns gezeigt, was in der Arbeitswelt nicht mehr funktioniert. Und da ist nicht nur die Pandemie. Überschwemmungen, Waldbrände, Inflation, Krieg – unsere Welt steht in Flammen, im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes.

From the Introduction: "Every biography is a story of adventure. The energetic personalities of the world represent an adventure in living. The philosophical personalities, on the other hand, represent an adventure in thinking. And when we examine the lives of the philosophers we find that the procession of a man's thoughts can be as exciting a spectacle as the pageantry of a man's deeds."

A generation of people around the world, from Boston to Bangkok, from New York to New Delhi, are making everyday choices in ways that defy traditional logic. They are judging where and how their clothes were made, not just how they fit. They are thinking global but buying local. They are spending their money and their time, forming loyalties, casting votes, and even enjoying entertainment based increasingly upon their desire to make a positive impact on others and the world around them.

This book takes its title from the 1980 comedy film The Gods Must Be Crazy, in which an empty Coca-Cola bottle is dropped from a plane onto a community of African bushmen. The bottle is thought to be a gift from the Gods, but after it incites bitter fighting amongst the villagers, the tribal leader decides to return it to the Gods, embarking upon a journey to the end of the world. Through my own metaphorical coke bottle, I visualize the dawn of a daunting new Empire.

Stoicism, one of the oldest Western philosophical schools, has enchanted scholars and the general public alike for over 2,000 years. Where some accounts of human nature and the particularly human good fall short by the reduction of human being to physical or psychical phenomena, Stoicism's power lies in engaging with the whole range of human experience, addressing rationality, emotion, piety, will, and both inner and outer impressions, each on their own terms, in language that treats each as significant in its own right.
