Alle 19.45 dell'8 settembre 1943, il maresciallo Badoglio, capo del governo, annuncia alla radio l'armistizio con gli angloamericani. Il proclama termina con le parole: le forze italiane «reagiranno ad eventuali attacchi di qualsiasi altra provenienza». Una conclusione ambigua - donde, se non da parte tedesca, possono arrivare gli ‘eventuali attacchi'? - che disorienta anche i comandi militari meglio intenzionati. Prive di ordini precisi, tranne poche eccezioni, le forze armate si dissolvono, i più si tolgono l'uniforme, fuggono.

Il secolo appena trascorso si è chiuso nel caos e l'inizio del nuovo si annuncia drammatico. La pistola di Gaetano Bresci spezza la vita di Umberto I, colpevole di aver decorato con la gran croce quel Bava Beccaris che aveva sparato sulla folla di Milano. Potrebbe essere l'inizio di una catastrofe politica e sociale, invece è l'avvio di un nuovo corso di politica liberale. Intanto in Europa impazza la Belle Époque.

17 febbraio 1600: il filosofo Giordano Bruno, condannato per eresia dall'Inquisizione romana, brucia, spogliato nudo, legato a un palo e imbavagliato, in Piazza Campo de' Fiori. Ad ardere sul rogo non è un cristiano qualunque, come Roma non è solo la capitale dello Stato della Chiesa ma anche il centro della cristianità. Bruno è un personaggio cosmopolita, amico di principi e ambasciatori, una figura europea di grande fama e livello intellettuale, noto ovunque.
