Whether you believe in the supernatural elements or not, it is fascinating to see how the idea of ghosts happened, and how it developed over the ages. A ghost is the soul or spirit of a departed individual or animal who can appear to the living in folklore. Ghosts are defined in numerous ways in folklore, varying from an unnoticeable presence to clear or hardly noticeable wispy shapes to reasonable, realistic forms. They are said to haunt particular spots, products, or people with whom they once had a relationship. Let’s talk about this more in this fascinating book.

Kushtaka or Kooshdakhaa is a Tlingit word meaning “land otter man.” The Kushtaka is on one hand the nemeses of the Tlingit people, yet necessary to their Shamans who play a critical role in the survival of the Tlingits. The Tlingit people are as mysterious in their beliefs as the Kushtaka, making for strange bedfellows.

King David Kalākaua introduces us to the people upon whom the legend of the Pele family is based. They departed Samoa as war refugees in the 12th century, settling in the foothills of Mauna Loa. As earthquakes and eruptions occurred during their interactions with the Hawaiians, this family of kahuna were accorded what the king described as “unique sanctity and power”. Pele was as mighty as she was beautiful. The tales of the volcano goddess earned the attention of Kamapuaa, the outcast son of the chief of Oahu who terrorized the island with his band of renegades.
