"Totem and Taboo: Resemblances Between the Mental Lives of Savages and Neurotics" is a work by Sigmund Freud, published in German in 1913. It is a collection of four essays first published in the journal "Imago" (1912-13), employing the application of psychoanalysis to the fields of archaeology, anthropology, and the study of religion.

Il est vrai que la proposition de l'auteur est attirante : le rêve, perçu comme l'accomplissement déguisé d'un désir, serait la voie royale qui mène à l'inconscient. À partir du récit de n'importe quel rêve, Freud s'autorise ainsi des interprétations dont le mécanisme utilise de libres associations afin d'accéder aux idées latentes et aux désirs refoulés du narrateur.

Dans ce texte, écrit en 1910, Sigmund Freud (1856-1939) s'attache à étudier le processus de la création artistique chez Léonard de Vinci. Il part d'un des premiers souvenirs d'enfance rapporté par le peintre. Pour Freud, il s'agit plutôt d'un fantasme, qu'il appellera "le fantasme au vautour", que Léonard "s'est construit plus tard et qu'il a alors rejeté dans son enfance" et qui se rapproche de certains "fantasmes de femmes ou d'homosexuels passifs".
