Sigmund Freud considérait cet ouvrage comme son œuvre fondamentale. Il eut d'ailleurs un succès retentissant. Il est vrai que la proposition de l'auteur est attirante : le rêve, perçu comme l'accomplissement déguisé d'un désir, serait la voie royale qui mène à l'inconscient. À partir du récit de n'importe quel rêve, Freud s'autorise ainsi des interprétations dont le mécanisme utilise de libres associations afin d'accéder aux idées latentes et aux désirs refoulés du narrateur.
