Questo racconto in stile gotico, reso celebre dal film omonimo, è stato scritto da Washington Irving nel 1819. Questo e il racconto seguente, “Il fidanzato fantasma” , ironizzano sulle superstizioni e sulla credulità popolare, facendo intravedere spiegazioni ben più banali. Completano la raccolta quattro dei noti “Racconti dell’Alhambra” che Irving scrisse durante la sua residenza in Spagna in qualità di ambasciatore degli Stati Uniti.

Mary W. Shelley (1797-1851)Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin nació el 30 de agosto de 1797 en Londres (Inglaterra). Era hija única del filósofo William Godwin y la escritora feminista Mary Wollstonecraft. Mary creció y se educó en un ambiente intelectual y progresista, que marcaría fuertemente su personalidad.

Mary Shelley, recien salida de la adolescencia fue la companera del celebre poeta ingles Percy Shelley, con quien se fugo a Suiza, a pesar de estar el casado. Cuando su esposa se suicido, los dos amantes contrajeron matrimonio. En una reunion, a la que asistio Byron, este ultimo propuso que cada uno escribiera una historia de horror y la joven sorprendio a todos cuando llego con la historia de "Frankenstein, o el moderno Prometeo", un clasico de la literatura de horror.

Esta apasionante obra de 1897, escrita en forma de novela epistolar, plasma de modo artístico las investigaciones de Bram Stoker acerca de los vampiros en el folclore europeo. Así vemos como el letrado británico Jonathan Harker emprende una fatigosa jornada hacia la región de Transilvania, en los montes Cárpatos, para dar consejo legal al tenebroso conde Drácula, quien pretende comprar tierras en Gran Bretania como paso inicial de un malévolo plan de dominación del mundo.

Pubblicato nel 1886, questo famosissimo romanzo di Stevenson è un grande classico della letteratura mistery e della fantascienza. Ciò non toglie che sia anche un grande opera letteraria che approfondisce la psicologia della scissione della personalità e il rapporto del uomo col suo lato ombra. Descrive inoltre mirabilmente lo stato di dipendenza provocato dalle droghe e l’illusione di potersene liberare facilmente si trova tutta nella frase del protagonista: “Posso liberarmi di Mr. Hyde quando voglio”.

Il giovane Victor Frankenstein, dopo aver acquisito conoscenze mediche e dopo aver studiato i fenomeni che riguardano il corpo umano post-mortem, realizza il suo sogno, regalando vita a una creatura dall’aspetto deforme e con una forza immane, formata unendo parti di corpi morti. Dopo diverse vicissitudini, il mostro lo supplica di toglierlo da un’insopportabile solitudine e di creare per lui una compagna. Il rifiuto da parte del suo creatore suscita l’ira incontenibile della creatura.

The Castle of Otranto is regarded as the first Gothic novel. The son of Manfred, Prince of Otranto, is mysteriously killed on his wedding day by a huge helmet. The event leads to a fast-paced story of jealous passion, intrigue, murder, and supernatural phenomena unfolding in an atmosphere of thunderclaps, moonlight, and dark castle walls, mirroring the inner turmoils of the characters themselves. Horace Walpole's tale, an immediate success when it first appeared in 1764, is a classic of its genre.

El alma humana oscila entre el bien y el mal. First published in the English literary anthology annual The Keepsake in 1833 by Mary Shelly, master of Gothic fiction, The Invisible Girl is a story about the turbulence of secret love. Like much of her work, Shelly blends the dark and the supernatural with elements of romance and intimacy and unravels this story within a story with aplomb, and the setting of rural Wales in the early 19th century lends to the foreboding and bittersweet tone of the tale.
