Grief Poetry

Mr. Hunter has a passion for expressing his voice through the writing of children’s books and poetry. This book is a compilation of about three dozen poems written during his younger years accompanied by narrative reflections on the inspiration for much of the poetry as he navigated early life through loss, love, abuse, and work as a bisexual and gay identified person.

Threnody is an archaic word which has its roots in the Greek term, which means to sing a dirge, generally at a funeral or at the loss of a cherished person. In this volume, D. Scott Smith (author of Motivational Listener) provides vision and understanding that allows for comparison between the “good old days” and the present times. The nineteenth century seems so distant and unreal, almost as if there is no connection between the people of that era and ourselves. I was 17 when my mum died from breast cancer. At that time, and for a period afterwards, I wasn't able to express myself verbally, so I turned to writing. It was cathartic, though I never had the courage to share what I wrote, let alone attempt to publish my work. I wouldn't claim to be a poet, or a writer, however, 20 years on, I feel ready to share. My hope is that these poems, written while I was still a teenager, will inspire, as well as be understood, whichever way you interpret them.

My Way With Words is reamed from decades of jotted thoughts and poems. Jotted thoughts are easily understood, but jotted poems I believe in my case deserves an explanation. Many of my poems were completed beginning to end with no changes between or very little editing and that includes a few longer poems.

The Bridge of Fire, which appeared in 1907, was Flecker's first published collection of poetry. It contains 35 poems, a number of which were revised and republished in later collections. As with Flecker's other collections, two persistent themes emerge: the poet's fascination with the glories of Grecian antiquity and his premonitions of an early demise. So I’m stepping back from the girl who thinks of myself as meek and incapable or crazy and a quitter. I need to remember all of the power it took to start all of the things I have started. I need to remember the person who finds herself lost in the woods and finds her legs under her and walks barefoot for her own survival.
