When I was in the fourth grade, we had a map of Vietnam on our kitchen wall. When my mother received an airmail letter, she would walk to the map and move one of the stickpins to a new location to see if one of her brothers was in harm’s way in some new hot spot or battle. I spent a lot of time worrying about that map. I had five uncles in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War. This is a book about going off to war, a book about coming back home, and a book about those who are left behind. I dedicate this book to those voices, my family, and every voice calling out at times of war.

The words you are about to hear have been ongoing for many, many years. They are not written to make you feel bad for me; they are written more as a lesson to myself. The words were never prethought but always came from some place within me forcibly picking up a pen and putting their utterances down at once. It was as if it was a command from the very depths of me, a strength in me that has always been there. Someone once said it was a goddess in me, the strong goddess who drives us on till we see the truth.

The soul's journey is one that discovers the true nature of the divine and each soul is love itself. Peeling off all layers of reality, only awareness and love remain. My poems have healed and transformed me, by sharing them I hope they will heal and inspire others.
