Grief Poetry

A microscopic and intense view of the sometimes invisible and ignored parts of the world we inhabit. I was 17 when my mum died from breast cancer. At that time, and for a period afterwards, I wasn't able to express myself verbally, so I turned to writing. It was cathartic, though I never had the courage to share what I wrote, let alone attempt to publish my work. I wouldn't claim to be a poet, or a writer, however, 20 years on, I feel ready to share. My hope is that these poems, written while I was still a teenager, will inspire, as well as be understood, whichever way you interpret them.

Friends and family gathered. Flowers everywhere. The casket. Days that just melt into each other. Sleepless nights. The pain in the pit of your stomach. Feeling all alone. I wrote this book because I remembered how hard it was when I lost my mother. That first holiday was the absolute worst. I ached as I imagined everyone being with their families, and yet, we sat with her empty chair. I just didn’t want anyone to feel as alone as I felt. With each loss, I found myself experiencing the same cycle of emotions.

My Way With Words is reamed from decades of jotted thoughts and poems. Jotted thoughts are easily understood, but jotted poems I believe in my case deserves an explanation. Many of my poems were completed beginning to end with no changes between or very little editing and that includes a few longer poems.

The Bridge of Fire, which appeared in 1907, was Flecker's first published collection of poetry. It contains 35 poems, a number of which were revised and republished in later collections. As with Flecker's other collections, two persistent themes emerge: the poet's fascination with the glories of Grecian antiquity and his premonitions of an early demise. Flecker seemed to be acutely aware that not only would he pass away himself, but also the fading world of British imperialism of which he was a characteristic representative.
