Mit der beigelegten Schwarzweißfotografie in Ihren Händen, beschließen Holmes und Watson Inspektor Wolfford aufzusuchen. Dieser kann es zuerst gar nicht richtig glauben. Der Mann auf dem Bild ist doch tatsächlich derselbe, der heute Morgen, direkt vor Scotland Yard, in einem geparkten Auto, tot aufgefunden wurde.

Ein drittes Gedicht! Ein drittes Foto! Ein drittes Opfer! Die Zeit rennt und Holmes und Watson sind dem Täter noch nicht einen einzigen Schritt nähergekommen. Selbst die Identität der neuerlichen Leiche bleibt ungeklärt.
