In The Bughouse Affair, this first of a new series of lighthearted historical mysteries set in 1890s San Francisco, former Pinkerton operative Sabina Carpenter and her detective partner, ex-Secret Service agent John Quincannon, undertake what initially appear to be two unrelated investigations. Sabina's case involves the hunt for a ruthless lady "dip" who uses fiendish means to relieve her victims of their valuables at Chutes Amusement Park and other crowded places. Quincannon, meanwhile, is after a slippery housebreaker who targets the homes of wealthy residents.

When a pleasant afternoon's bicycling through Golden Gate Park with a friend ends with the revelation of threatening letters, followed by a gunshot in a mansion garden, Sabina Carpenter knows this is a case that demands her immediate and undivided attention. The questions her partner John Quincannon has to unravel are not difficult: Wrixton, a wealthy banker, has met his extortionist's first demand, but the order to pay another $5,000 is too much to face. The banker's real problem is something he doesn't want to reveal.

When Harris starts to investigate the disappearance of a young boy 20 years ago, he thinks that it’s going to be a sad but open-and-shut case. But then, he starts to discover signs that this wasn’t an isolated incident, that multiple boys were taken over the years, and that there might still be danger in the present day. Maggie and Nick travel to Liverpool and North Wales to see if they can crack open the case and finally be able to tell the McRoberts family what happened to their ancestor.

The buckle is unique and stunning, gleaming turquoise stones set in exquisitely carved silver; a masterpiece from the native American west. A body of an American Indian is found in a hotel room in Mayfair. Scotland Yard seeks the help of Sherlock Holmes in solving the murder.

After having some breathing room from his last case, which brought him up against Islamic operatives in San Francisco in The Black Stone, Cyrus Skeen and his wife take a short vacation on a luxury bus, the Pickwick Stage. But the bus is held up by gangsters. Skeen goes into action and foils the hijacking. But his heroism engenders even more problems and perils.

Quincannon’s pursuit of two con men who have absconded to Hawaii with a considerable sum of his employer’s assets dovetails nicely with Sabina’s vision of a second honeymoon. But neither is wont to stay out of trouble, and Sabina inadvertently becomes involved in a locked room/dying message murder in Honolulu.

While the future is unclear, Sabina and John know one thing for certain: they will protect their clients from flimflammers, thieves, and murderers, and do whatever it takes to run these dregs of society into the arms of the law. Sometimes, that requires a subtle touch. Professor A. Vargas, self-styled medium extraordinaire, and his partner Annabelle, use guile and trickery to swindle bereaved men and women eager to contact the spirits of deceased loved ones.

A con man always has a bag of tricks, ready to fool the unsuspecting, and almost everyone is unsuspecting until they get taken. When that happens, they turn to Carpenter and Quincannon, Professional Detective Services, to recover their money and what’s left of their dignity, and perhaps even to save their lives.

Nämlich seine getrennt lebende Frau, die besagtes Ei in dem Schloss des Herzogs gefinkelt versteckt hat. Nun ist es an Holmes das wertvolle Ei wieder in die Hände seines Besitzers zurück zu bringen.

Noch einmal versuchen Sherlock Holmes und Doktor Watson, dem immer grausamer agierenden Mörder "Jack the Ripper" eine Falle zu stellen. Präzise leitet der große Detektiv aus der Chronologie der bisherigen Morde und der in ihnen enthaltenen Symbolismen eine Prognose für den mutmaßlich nächsten Tatort ab. Um nur wenige Meter soll sich Holmes diesmal irren. Und tatsächlich wird der "Ripper" erstmals auch wirklich bei einer seiner Taten gestört, kann den so präzise geplanten Symbolmord an Elizabeth Stride nicht wie erhofft zu Ende bringen. Aber genau das "muss" er.

Mit ihrem bisherigen Wissen über den Mörder, den die Welt heute nur unter dem Namen "Jack the Ripper" kennt, versuchen Sherlock Holmes und Doktor Watson, dem Verbrecher erstmals eine Falle zu stellen. Alles passt - sowohl den neuerlichen Tatort als auch die exakte Mordnacht kann Holmes aus den bisherigen Taten präzise vorhersagen. Und doch kann der Mörder wieder knapp entkommen. Er hinterlässt erneut ein noch einmal grausameres Schlachtfeld auf seinem Opfer, eine schockierende Botschaft an die Öffentlichkeit.

Am zweiten Weihnachtstag 1887 liegt in einem Hauseingang in Whitechapel / London ein erstes Opfer jenes Mörders, der später einmal "Jack the Ripper" genannt werden wird: "Fairy Fay". Sie ist das "Schlüsselopfer" - das die verheerendste Mordserie der Geschichte auslösen wird. Kein Geringerer als der berühmte Detektiv Sherlock Holmes nimmt auf Bitten von Scotland Yard die Spur auf. Und findet erste Hinweise auf einen bisher unbekannten (aber verdammt realen) Symbol-Kosmos, der diesen primären Ripper-Mord mit allen folgenden verbinden wird.
