London, 1878. One April morning, a small boat bearing a young woman’s corpse floats down the murky waters of the Thames. When the victim is identified as Rose Albert, daughter of a prominent judge, the Scotland Yard director gives the case to Michael Corravan, one of the only senior inspectors remaining after a corruption scandal the previous autumn left the division in ruins. Reluctantly, Corravan abandons his ongoing case, a search for the missing wife of a shipping magnate, handing it over to his young colleague, Mr. Stiles.

November 1940. Darkness descends, and another anxious night begins for those tasked with guarding the industrial heartland of London from enemy attack. As a policeman patrols the Royal Albert Dock, something catches his eye - a man is sprawled awkwardly across a nearby barge, a dagger lodged in his back. Detective Inspector John Jago of West Ham CID discovers the victim was a dock worker by day and a Home Guard volunteer by night - and there are things even his wife doesn't know about his past.

On a stormy night in March 1941, Maisie Rose Hawkins leaves her drunk husband, Stan, out in the rain - and he disappears. Detective Sergeant Bob Robbins and young PC Laurie Oliver are called out to investigate and discover that Stan’s small fishing boat is gone, the rope sawn through. As Bob searches for answers, it becomes apparent that in this small Cornish village where everyone knows everything about everybody, nobody quite knows the truth.

October, 1940. Bombs are falling on Stratford when air-raid warden Sylvia Parks sees a house with a light shining like a beacon to the enemy aircraft overhead, violating the strict blackout regulations. With no answer at the door she manages to break in, only to discover the body of a young woman – and she's been strangled with a stocking. For Detective Inspector John Jago, the scene brings back memories of the gruesome Soho Strangler, who murdered four women in the mid-1930s but has never been caught. Is there a connection?

Sofort gerät der Journalist und ehemalige Cop Tommy Smith ins Fadenkreuz der rassistischen Polizisten. Um sich zu entlasten, muss Smith mehr über die Geschichte erfahren, an der Bishop gearbeitet hat.

It’s spring 1962, and a sergeant with the Memphis Police Department is found dead only hours before his scheduled testimony before a grand jury. Was it suicide, or was it murder? What was he going to testify about? A handwritten note left by the sergeant and addressed to the district attorney disappears.

It is 1905, and Chicago is an open town. The most accessible part of town is the Levee District. It is an area of the city that's hard to tell the crooks from the cops. There are brothels, madams, opium dens, gambling joints and plenty of alcohol, but it all comes at a price in the Levee, and the two Ward Aldermen get their share of every vice's dollar. With the hanging of serial killer, Simon Kluge, police Detective Patrick Moses is suddenly without a case. Before Moses can relax, he is approached by an aging retail mogul who asks him to investigate the mysterious shooting of his son.

The detectives in Josie's squad don’t fit the spit and polish image of the Adam 12 LAPD. They’re grubby, unshaven, disrespectful to authority, and generally do police work in an effective, if not by-the-book way. She’s comfortable balancing on the edge of legality to make a good arrest until one night an informant tells her that a cop has stepped over the line and is selling rock cocaine. In Josie’s mind, there’s nothing worse than dirty cops. She learns the hard way that they can be vicious, clever, and determined to do anything - including murder - to avoid capture.

Jens Druwe, der glaubte, als Polizeiinspektor nach 1945 ein neues Leben beginnen zu können, wird als Kriegsverbrecher inhaftiert und verurteilt. Man wirft ihm vor, bei Säuberungsaktionen im Osten dabei gewesen zu sein. Auch seine Freundin Eva, die von ihm schwanger ist, kann ihn nicht retten. Doch da eröffnet sich eine neue Chance. Im Auftrag des britischen Geheimdiensts soll Druwe verdeckt im Zuchthaus arbeiten, um untergetauchte Nazis aufzuspüren. Es geht vor allem darum, einen Mann zu finden, der für Tausende von Tötungen im Osten verantwortlich ist.

Hamburg 1928: Seit einem Jahr gibt es im Hamburger Stadthaus eine weibliche Kriminalpolizei unter Leitung der resoluten Josefine Erkens. Auch die freiheitsliebende Paula heuert dort an. Als eine Tänzerin ermordet und obszön entstellt wird, gelingt es Erkens, Paula und eine weitere Kommissarin in der bisher rein männlich besetzen Mordkommission unterzubringen. Angeführt wird diese Ermittlungsgruppe von Martin Broder, der der Hölle von Flandern entkam. Zu Beginn tut er sich schwer mit den "unfähigen Weibern", doch die Frauen arbeiten mit präziser Logik und kühlem Witz.

Berlin 1949: Ein Arzt stürzt vom Dach einer Klinik für Geschlechts- und Infektionskrankheiten. Spätestens als im sowjetisch kontrollierten Teil der Stadt ein Mord geschieht und der Vater von Kommissar Stein, ein strammer Kommunist und ein Ermittler der Markgraf-Polizei, seinen Sohn bittet, herauszufinden, wen der Tote im Westen hatte treffen wollen, wird Kommissar Stein klar, dass es einen Zusammenhang zwischen den Morden gibt. Statt mit ihm zusammenzuarbeiten, enthält der Vater ihm jedoch wichtige Fakten vor.

Albert Beauchamp disappeared just before Christmas in 1856. When he reappears more than a year later, he's in several pieces, packed in salt in a shipping crate in New Orleans.
