På Söder i Stockholm under efterkrigstidens omvälvande år finner vi den unga pojken Kenneth. Efter andra världskriget kommer hans föräldrar till Sverige som flyktingar, mamman av ekonomiska skäl, och pappan av politiska. Den lilla familjen finner ett hem i ett hyreshus reserverat för judar som saknar ekonomiska medel. Här växer Kenneth upp, i ett samhälle i samhället. Han går i en judisk skola, och träffar bara andra judiska barn.
