Living in the Belgian Congo with her husband in the 1960s, Fran’s mother became pregnant with a daughter. However, right after she gave birth in the hospital, she felt strange. Unbeknownst to anyone, another daughter was on the way, but before anybody responded, an hour had passed. Because of the delay, Fran was born with cerebral palsy. Growing up with her siblings in Africa, Fran always felt different. When everyone else was playing and having fun, she would watch and wish she could join in.

In her former career as an English professor, Theresa Brown had been shielded from the harsh reality of death. That all changed the day she decided to become an oncology nurse. In Critical Care, Theresa writes powerfully and honestly about her first year on the hospital floor. With great compassion and a disarming sense of humor, she shares the trials and triumphs of her patients and comes to realize that caring for a patient means much more than simply treating a disease.

The book is a compilation of short personal medical stories compiled from my 45 years in the practice of Emergency Medicine and Anesthesiology. Each short story is based on actual events and meant to entertain as well as provide some insight into a career in ER Medicine and the practice of Anesthesia. The style of writing is meant for people with a non medical as well as a medical background. The stories vary from 'you can't make this up' humorous side of practicing medicine to very serious medical care scenarios.
