Napoléon Bonaparte (born Napoleone di Buonaparte; 15 August 1769 – 5 May 1821), usually referred to as simply Napoleon in English, was a French military and political leader who rose to prominence during the French Revolution and led several successful campaigns during the Revolutionary Wars.

In 1815 deposed emperor Napoleon returned to France and threatened the already devastated and exhausted continent with yet another war. Near the small Belgian municipality of Waterloo, two large, hastily mobilized armies faced each other to decide the future of Europe--Napoleon's forces on one side, and the Duke of Wellington's on the other.

In the last months of the Korean war the US Marines had transitioned into a near stationary force manning the main battle line in a serious of forward outposts. In this position they were under near constant bombardment and engaging in ongoing patrol battles. This book is a study of the outpost war concept through official documents and anecdote.

The frontiers of states are either large rivers, or chains of mountains, or deserts. Of all these obstacles to the march of an army, the most difficult to overcome is the desert; mountains come next, and broad rivers occupy the third place.

This book was issued to allied commanders towards the end of the WWII. The allied leadership was expecting a prolonged armed occupation of Germany with German patriots continuing the war by other means. The German high command made much of the “werewolf” units they would be seeding across the country to make any occupation a bloody affair. In this book commanders were offered advice based on the experiences of the occupying forces that had ruled over Europe during the war.

Britain was encouraged to participate in the second Gulf War by the publication of an intelligence report that suggested that Saddam Hussein could attack the UK with weapons of mass destruction within 45 minutes. The battle of the Somme was the largest battle of the first world war, in which over one million men were killed or wounded, and during which the British army suffered its worst day ever with over sixty thousand casualties. The Commander in Chief of the British forces, Sir Douglas Haig, issued a despatch in the following month via the London Gazette. Part news, part propaganda this despatch failed to mention the tragic losses and maximised the minimal gains.

In 1798, an initial review of France’s naval forces had led Napoleon to conclude his navy could not hope to outfight the power of the Royal Navy, which had been the dominant naval power for centuries, so he was forced to look elsewhere. After months of planning, Napoleon crafted a scheme to attack and conquer Egypt, denying the British easy access to their colonies in India, with the ultimate goal of linking up with the Sultan Tipoo in India itself and defeating the British in the field there.

'The Retreat from Mons' was a pamphlet published during the Great War (1917) which explained to the British public in glowing and glorious terms the details of the war's first allied disasters. An exercise in self-proclaimed propaganda, it stands as an exemplary sample of how the war was presented to the public in general. With heroic anecdotes and an overview of the retreat of an entire army, this is a fascinating insight into wartime publications.

The Napoleonic Wars, which took place between 1803 and 1815, were spearheaded by probably France’s best tactician and military strategist to date: General Napoleon Bonaparte. His tactics and strategies were so grounded that it has served as the basis for many major warfare campaigns and maneuvers, both during his lifetime as well as after his demise. Even France’s sworn enemy for most of the medieval era, the British, acknowledged his ingenuity despite his ultimate defeat at the hands of the British army at the end of life.
