Widely regarded as a classic on the Vietnam War, Decent Interval provides a scathing critique of the CIA's role in and final departure from that conflict. Still the most detailed and respected account of America's final days in Vietnam, the book was written at great risk and ultimately at great sacrifice by an author who believed in the CIA's cause but was disillusioned by the agency's treacherous withdrawal, leaving thousands of Vietnamese allies to the mercy of an angry enemy.

Why, after over 100 Sigma war games showed us that we could not win, did we still go into Vietnam? In this treatise, Sun Tzu lays out his basic philosophy of how to wage military campaigns, including a description of the correct temperament of a general, flanking and attack strategies, the use of spies, the employment of deception and counter-intelligence and dozens of other time-honored pieces of military advice. The book has been studied by scores of leaders, presidents, generals and even corporate titans and Sun Tzu is often praised as the finest military strategist in history.

In the early 1970s, as US combat forces began to withdraw from Southeast Asia, South Vietnamese and Cambodian forces continued the fight against the People's Army of Vietnam and the National Front for the Liberation of South Vietnam, more commonly known as the Viet Cong. Despite the evacuation of its ground troops, the United States promised to materially support its allies' struggle against communist aggression.

Waged from June 26 to September 1, 1862, the Second Manassas campaign pitted the US Armies of Virginia and the Potomac against the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia and its new commander, Robert E. Lee. The campaign unfolded against a backdrop of momentous US political decisions regarding confiscation, emancipation, and Confederate civilians.
