1733, John Kay brevetta in Inghilterra la spoletta volante che consente di accelerare le operazioni di tessitura e ridurre la manodopera. È a quella data che si fa risalire l'inizio della Rivoluzione industriale.

A metà marzo 1610 Galileo pubblica il "Sidereus Nuncius", l'opera che annuncia una serie straordinaria di novità celesti che avrebbero inferto un colpo definitivo alla concezione geometrica dell'universo elaborata da Aristotele e sistematizzata da Tolomeo. Le scoperte galileiane, ottenute col supporto essenziale del cannocchiale, contribuiscono all'affermazione della teoria eliocentrica delineata da Copernico nel suo "De revolutionibus orbium coelestium" del 1543.

Provinciale. Ambizioso. Intelligente. Questo è il generale Napoleone Bonaparte nel 1795, quando ha appena ventisei anni. All'epoca nessuno è disposto a scommettere su di lui. Eppure, appena un anno dopo, Napoleone si impone come una stella di prima grandezza. Siamo nel 1796, è l'inizio di una storia memorabile di vertiginosa ascesa e di sconvolgente caduta; potere, glamour, amori esotici o impossibili, brutalità, tradimenti e grandi realizzazioni si intrecciano e si confondono nella vita di Bonaparte. "Il 6 maggio abbiamo preso d'assalto Roma, ucciso seimila persone, saccheggiato le case, preso quello che abbiamo trovato nelle chiese e alla fine incendiato buona parte della città". Così un lanzichenecco descrive il saccheggio che le truppe imperiali infliggono a Roma. Le truppe a difesa della città sono deboli, le mura e l'artiglieria non bastano a fermare gli assedianti. Clemente VII riesce a riparare a Castel Sant'Angelo solo grazie al sacrificio dell'intera Guardia svizzera.

1 novembre 1535-19 dicembre 1548: fra queste due date, che segnano l'una la morte senza eredi di Francesco II Sforza e l'altra l'ingresso trionfale di Filippo II a Milano, si compie la parabola del Ducato da stato autonomo a periferia della Spagna. L'estinzione della dinastia milanese apre infatti un vuoto di potere legittimo di cui profitta Carlo V, sovrano del Sacro Romano Impero, per impossessarsi della città e trasmetterla poi al figlio ed erede Filippo II, re di Spagna.

Ci sono documenti che parlano da soli. Uno di questi è l'editto del novembre 1786 con cui l'illuminato Pietro Leopoldo (Granduca di Toscana dal 1765 al 1790, quando succede al fratello Giuseppe II alla guida dell'Impero) promulga il nuovo Codice criminale, poi detto toscano o leopoldino, abolendo, per la prima volta nella storia degli Stati moderni, la pena di morte, la tortura, il delitto di lesa maestà e la confisca dei beni del condannato.

A tre anni dalla pubblicazione delle celebri tesi di Wittenberg, papa Leone X scomunica Martin Lutero, mentre la Riforma protestante si diffonde in tutta l'Europa settentrionale. Si inaugurano processi storici profondi, che vedono da un lato la ridefinizione della Chiesa controriformistica e dall'altro le molteplici articolazioni del protestantesimo, via via frantumatosi in una miriade di Chiese e sette, dai calvinisti agli anglicani, dagli anabattisti ai quaccheri.
