Il 2 giugno del 1793 la Convenzione, da tre giorni in seduta permanente nelle Tuileries, già reggia dei sovrani di Francia, tenta di rompere l'assedio delle sezioni sanculotte parigine ma viene respinta dal popolo in armi. Poco dopo, i ventidue deputati girondini, considerati nemici dalla Comune, vengono espulsi dalla fazione giacobina e arrestati.

Provinciale. Ambizioso. Intelligente. Questo è il generale Napoleone Bonaparte nel 1795, quando ha appena ventisei anni. All'epoca nessuno è disposto a scommettere su di lui. Eppure, appena un anno dopo, Napoleone si impone come una stella di prima grandezza. Siamo nel 1796, è l'inizio di una storia memorabile di vertiginosa ascesa e di sconvolgente caduta; potere, glamour, amori esotici o impossibili, brutalità, tradimenti e grandi realizzazioni si intrecciano e si confondono nella vita di Bonaparte. Che segna un'epoca.

Ci sono documenti che parlano da soli. Uno di questi è l'editto del novembre 1786 con cui l'illuminato Pietro Leopoldo (Granduca di Toscana dal 1765 al 1790, quando succede al fratello Giuseppe II alla guida dell'Impero) promulga il nuovo Codice criminale, poi detto toscano o leopoldino, abolendo, per la prima volta nella storia degli Stati moderni, la pena di morte, la tortura, il delitto di lesa maestà e la confisca dei beni del condannato.

A tre anni dalla pubblicazione delle celebri tesi di Wittenberg, papa Leone X scomunica Martin Lutero, mentre la Riforma protestante si diffonde in tutta l'Europa settentrionale. Si inaugurano processi storici profondi, che vedono da un lato la ridefinizione della Chiesa controriformistica e dall'altro le molteplici articolazioni del protestantesimo, via via frantumatosi in una miriade di Chiese e sette, dai calvinisti agli anglicani, dagli anabattisti ai quaccheri.

17 febbraio 1600: il filosofo Giordano Bruno, condannato per eresia dall'Inquisizione romana, brucia, spogliato nudo, legato a un palo e imbavagliato, in Piazza Campo de' Fiori. Ad ardere sul rogo non è un cristiano qualunque, come Roma non è solo la capitale dello Stato della Chiesa ma anche il centro della cristianità. Bruno è un personaggio cosmopolita, amico di principi e ambasciatori, una figura europea di grande fama e livello intellettuale, noto ovunque.
