1733, John Kay brevetta in Inghilterra la spoletta volante che consente di accelerare le operazioni di tessitura e ridurre la manodopera. È a quella data che si fa risalire l'inizio della Rivoluzione industriale.

A metà marzo 1610 Galileo pubblica il "Sidereus Nuncius", l'opera che annuncia una serie straordinaria di novità celesti che avrebbero inferto un colpo definitivo alla concezione geometrica dell'universo elaborata da Aristotele e sistematizzata da Tolomeo. Le scoperte galileiane, ottenute col supporto essenziale del cannocchiale, contribuiscono all'affermazione della teoria eliocentrica delineata da Copernico nel suo "De revolutionibus orbium coelestium" del 1543.

"Il 6 maggio abbiamo preso d'assalto Roma, ucciso seimila persone, saccheggiato le case, preso quello che abbiamo trovato nelle chiese e alla fine incendiato buona parte della città". Così un lanzichenecco descrive il saccheggio che le truppe imperiali infliggono a Roma. Le truppe a difesa della città sono deboli, le mura e l'artiglieria non bastano a fermare gli assedianti. Clemente VII riesce a riparare a Castel Sant'Angelo solo grazie al sacrificio dell'intera Guardia svizzera.
