Of the three surgeons who accompanied Custer's Seventh Cavalry on June 25, 1876, only the youngest, 28-year-old Henry Porter, survived that day's ordeal, riding through a gauntlet of Indian attackers and up the steep bluffs to Major Marcus Reno's hilltop position. But the story of Dr. Porter's wartime exploits goes far beyond the battle itself.

After covering racial unrest in the remote northwest corner of his home state of Nebraska in 1999, journalist Stew Magnuson returned four years later to consider the larger questions of its peoples, their paths, and the forces that separate them. John C. Cremony was the first White man to become fluent in the Apache language. He worked for the US government, translating for military personnel across treacherous parts of the country. It was then that he first came in contact with the Apache people and went on to learn about their ways firsthand for nine years. He was personal friends with Chiefs Mangas Coloradas and Cochise, and he wrote of his adventures in dealing with the US Military and the Indian tribes of the Southwest.

His story has electrified readers for more than eight decades, and it continues to galvanize debates around representation, respectability, social justice, and racism in American life.
