Boyhood is the second book in the Childhood, Boyhood, Youth trilogy. Childhood was the first published novel by Leo Tolstoy, released in November 1852. It was the first in a series of three novels and was followed by Boyhood and Youth. Published when Tolstoy was just 23 years old, the book was an immediate success, earning notice from other Russian novelists including Ivan Turgenev, who heralded the young Tolstoy as a major up-and-coming figure in Russian literature. Tolstoy had first heard of Murad during his travels, and the author became inspired by Murad's refusal to give in to the demands of a corrupt world. Hadji Murad shares many of the same themes found in War and Peace.

After a feud with his commander, he defects to the Russians, only to find that he is now trusted by neither side.

In the winter of 1854 Tolstoy, then an officer in the Russian army, arranged to be transferred to the besieged town of Sebastopol. Wishing to see at first hand the action of what would become known as the Crimean War, he was spurred on by a fierce patriotism, but also by an equally fierce desire to alert the authorities to appalling conditions in the army. Writing with the truth as his utmost aim, he brought home to Russia's entire literate public the atrocities of war. In doing so, he realized his own vocation as a writer and established his literary reputation.
