Today, nursing is one of the most ubiquitous professions in the world, and images of war immediately call to mind nursing the wounded, but it was not long ago that such ideas were relatively primitive. Indeed, schoolchildren are still taught about the revolutionary exploits of Florence Nightingale, the war nurse who is often credited as the founder of modern nursing.

Called for Such a Time as This is based on the experience of a COVID-19 nurse who worked within several different NHS hospitals in the United Kingdom. The author, in her own words, gives a riveting account of her first unplanned encounter with COVID-19 patients. Her storytelling includes her fears, her tears, vulnerabilities, prayers, and her strength during this journey. Esther knew that there was a divine calling on her decision making; duty bound, she accepted the call to action.

Kiwi nurse-midwife, Barbara Walker - who spent 20 years working for international aid agencies - shares her dramatic, heart-rending, and inspiring stories of the situations she faced and the people she sought to help. From the Sakeo One Refugee Camp in Thailand, where she cared for those fleeing Pol Pot’s regime in Cambodia in a make-shift bamboo-framed field hospital, to her last placement in Mozambique that ended due to a death threat, Barbara’s Christian faith gave her strength and kept her focused.
